Sun and summer on the mind

April 6th, 2009

The sun is finally shining in Idaho.  These last two weeks have blessed us with more snow bringing our yearly snow totals in the Stanley basin to 100%.  With some much needed sun on our faces we are thinking about our summer plans.   These are trying times and we want to remain optimistic.  We would like to offer a $5 dollar discount to our returning guests this year.  When you call to confirm a reservation just let us know you heard about the discount on our blog.  We know it is a small thing, but we would love to have you float with us again this summer.  Don’t forget to check out our Idaho Vacation planning page.  There is quite a bit of information about Sun Valley, Stanley, & the SNRA as well as outfitters we recommend for longer trips.

See you in a few months, we will be rafting in Sun Valley in no time.

Salmon River Update

December 16th, 2008

Winter is finally here in the Sawtooth Valley.  Sun Valley Company sounds optimistic about opening new terrain and we have more snow in the forecast.  For those of you who float with The River Company, we have some interesting news.  They are replacing the old O’Brien bridge.  Carol King was generous in donating monies to put in a temporary bridge.  On Dec 11th however the construction team ran into a bit of a glitch as half of the bridge fell into the river.  The crew removed the bridge from the river in record time and they are now nearing completion.

King offered to partner with the SNRA and put up an unspecified amount to help replace the bridge. Erik Gillberg, King’s ranch manager, said King was willing to share expenses for a new Robinson Bar Bridge not only to restore access to her ranch, but also to help Stanley-area rafting outfitters, who use the bridge to portage around Indian Riffles during the height of salmon spawning season.
Challis Messenger

For guests who visit us to float the salmon river late season to watch migrating Chinook Salmon this is great news.  This bridge will help tremendously from an operations standpoint.  The River Company would like to thank the Forest Service and Carol King for rapidly finding a solution to replace the bridge.

Have a great Holiday,

David and Heather

Turtle and the Hare 2008 Snowpack

May 12th, 2008

I love the story of the Turtle and the Hare. I know I need to be consistently reminded to slow down to win the race. Lucky for those living in the Stanley Basin our 125% snow pack has heard this story too. Typical temps for May usually are hovering around the 60′s and 70′s. Last year on our training trip on the Salmon it was close to 90 degrees. This year you can count on one hand the day’s that it has been warmer than 50. What does this mean for those wanting to raft the Salmon River this year? Great water flows. Our river rafting trips are always a good time, but the more water the better. Low elevation snows are off and we have our higher elevation snows ready to come off nice and easy, which translates into great water flows all summer long.

Hope to see you all this summer.

River Rafting Trips and Gourmet foodThe River Company was proud to host the Stanley stop for Taste and Tour Idaho, a media tour of Idaho highlighting Idaho food and wine. After touring Idaho’s wine country and vineyards the team of writers and Idaho representatives was ready for a bit of Idaho whitewater adventure. Not to be outdone by the rest of the tour, we served Organic Lava Lake lamb, All-natural Snake River Farms beef, fresh Idaho grown potatoes, and locally grown greens. Although this menu is not our daily trip offering, if you are looking for a private group rafting trip we would love to accommodate you. Read the rest of this entry »
